Junzo Sakakura was born in Hashima-gun in Gifu Prefecture in 1901 in the family of a Japanese sake brewer. After graduating from the liberal arts department of the First Higher School in Tokyo, he entered the Art History Department of Tokyo Imperial University, where he became interested in architecture. He resolved to study under Le Corbusier, who was then becoming known as a leader of the modern movement.

In 1929 he journeyed to France and at the recommendation of Le Corbusier enrolled in a course in architectural construction at college. From 1931 to 1936, he was an important member of the staff at Le Corbusier’s atelier and participated in urban planning projects and the design of private houses.

After returning to Japan in 1936, Sakakura journeyed to France again to design the Japanese Pavilion at the 1937 Paris Exposition of Art and Technology, which received the architectural Grand Prix in 1937, gaining him worldwide recognition.

In 1940, he established his own office, Junzo Sakakura Architectural Office, where he completed more than 300 built works until his death in 1969 at the age of 68. They include simple wooden prehab structures built during the war years to large terminal buildings in Osaka and Tokyo, built from the 1950s through the end of his career, and architectural landmarks such as the 1951 Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura and L’Institut Franco-Japonais de Tokyo. Through these works, as well as a range of work that included furniture and houses that blended the modern with the traditional, he continually pursued design in the service of humanity.

He also exerted a strong influence on design in postwar Japan through activities such as curating the exhibition “Contact avec L’art japonais: tradition, selection, creation” (Tokyo and Osaka, Takashimaya) with Charlotte Perriand in 1941 and the Japanese exhibitions at the 1957 and 1960 Milan triennale, as well as serving as the first chairman of the jury for the “Good Design Selection System” established in 1957.
